If you're prepared for zombies, You're prepared for anything!

The series begins with a slight flash-forward from the actual beginning of the story; we see Rick driving down the road looking for gas like he's taking a Sunday drive (not smart)  After stopping at a defunct gas station he wanders around a bit until he encounters a young walker.  It's at this point that Rick finally does something smart and despite the moral difficulty, he puts the little girl down.  The walker you don't put down today may be the one eating you tomorow.  Unfortunately though, he needlessly uses his gun, putting him back in the stupid column.  This not only uses up precious ammunition but the noise could draw in more walkers.  At this point the opening credits run, followed by the actual beginning which has Shane and Rick anticipating a shootout with some criminals at a road block.  While it has nothing to do with the zombie apocalypse, I think it's worth mentioning that the only reason Rick gets shot here is because he fails to follow procedure and clear the scene before getting into the discussion with Shane about what to tell Laurie.  Waking up in the hospital, Rick discovers the world has changed.  At this point I think it's only fair to say that while we'll be picking out Rick's many mistakes, we'll also be cutting him some slack for the fact that he's just learning about all of it.  Case in point, riding the bicycle down the street to his house and then just stumbling around inside looking for Carl and Laurie.  Then there's the father and son Rick encounters.  Once Rick decided he was going to Atlanta there was no reason for them not to go with him.  And if there was a legitimate reason for them to stay (which there wasn't) then they should've stayed in the Sherriffs office which offered much more protection than a residential house.  Ricks next big mistake comes when he tracks down the half-walker he first encountered in the park at the beginning.  While killing EVERY walker is a good idea, wandering around an open park looking for one is not; and firing your gun to do it just goes back to what we talked about earlier.  Not smart.  After aquiring a horse, Rick then procedes to Atlanta where once again he foolishly travels in the open and almost gets eaten by a horde, only to end up trapped inside a tank.
