          It has long been understood by those in power that in order to keep massive numbers of people under control, you must first control what they think.  History doesn't just show us examples of the masses being manipulated, history shows that the masses have ALWAYS been manipulated to one extent or another.  Fear has always been an effective tool to achieve this.  Fear of God, fear of enemies, and just the fear of the unknown have all been used quite effectively in the past, but manipulation comes in many forms. 

• The men who formed the Federal Reserve Bank had nothing to do with the federal government.  They were a group of the wealthiest and most influentual bankers and businessmen of the time, who got together and created one central bank for the purpose of regulating and controlling the banking system in this country.  Knowing the people wouldn't trust a bunch of wealthy bankers to do this, they used the word "federal" in the name to deceive people into thinking it was backed by the U.S. Government.
• Shortly after the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, newspapers were forbidden by local government to use the word "earthquake" or make any reference to an earthquake in stories about the San Francisco 'fire'.  Officials felt that if people thought San Francisco was at-risk for earthquakes (which it was and is) then people wouldn't want to move there.  So they hid the truth, and in doing so, wound up letting thousands of contractors skirt around newly-enacted building codes that would have made structures much more earthquake resistant and let thousands of people move there, oblivious to the dangers.
• In the 1950's and 1960's the United States did a lot of testing with nuclear weapons.  The were detonated underground, in the air, on the water, and just about any place else you can think of, and as a result, the government learned a lot about radiation, fall-out, etc.  By the late 1940's they knew no one would survive within 20 mile of ground zero should a nuclear strike occur, but they couldn't exactly issue "kiss your ass goodbye" drills to the public either.  Instead, they came up with a plan to make people THINK they could survive.  During the early years of the cold war 'duck and cover' drills were regularly practiced at schools and workplaces.  The procedure involved getting under your desk and covering your head, as if that would protect you from a thermo-nuclear blast.  The government issued these plans to the american public knowing full well that if it ever actually happened no one would have been left alive to call them liars.
• American politicians rallied the public against the NSA after a contractor revealed they had been using phone records to connect american citizens to known terrorists, essentially spying on our own people.  Everybody was up-in-arms about this seeming violation of our rights.  Strangely enough, however, while everyone bitches about our phone records being used to catch terrorists, nobody says anything about the hundreds, if not thousands, of companies out there who's sole business plan is to spy on you.  They moniter the types of phone calls you make, the websites you visit, the purchases you make, the books you read, the music you listen to, whether you're married, whether or not you have kids, and so on and so on.  These companies moniter every aspect of your life that they possibly can, and they don't do it for anything as noble as catching terrorists.  They do it for the purpose of learning how to get more money out of your pocket and into theirs, or to learn how best to manipulate you into voting for the candidate who hired them, etc.  So while you're worried about the NSA listening in on the phone call from your Aunt Ida in Omaha, corporate america is learning how often you have sex with your wife and what position is your favorite.

These are just a few of the examples of The People being lied to and manipulated, just in recent history, by people or governments who either thought they were doing the public a favor or were just out to help themselves.  Either way it's pretty clear that, as a group, people have always been manipulated by someone, somewhere, for one reason or another.  The real question is...who's manipulating us now, and for what purpose?
